Birth of “The Pennywinks”

In this post we want to share how we created our mischievous puzzle mascot “The Pennywinks” who makes an appearance in every puzzle design that we do.

From the onset our creative lead had a vision that each jigsaw puzzle design would depict a story and that would require a strong protagonist to lead the puzzlers through each journey. Having a lifelong obsession with doodling strange creatures and monsters the creative lead knew the mascot had to be a strange looking thing.

In the process of creating the Pennywinks brand name the we agreed that a Victorian top hat would be involved with the brand. This led to some of the team wanting a very smart, victorian style gent as the mascot, quite different from a weird looking monster. After a few “passionate” debates we all agreed a combination of the two would be perfect - a very smart looking monster.

Aimed with a detailed brief our character artist went to work and perfectly captured what we wanted. However at this stage he did have a bit of a resemblance to Gizmo, the furball from the 80's classic movie Gremlins.

A few tweaks later and ta-da - The Pennywinks was born fully formed with his magical portal opening purple hat.
