The puzzle fun is in the details - refining our puzzle art

In this post we’d like to share with you some of the refinements and tweaks we made to our jigsaw artwork to make every piece of the puzzle pleasing to piece together. We think you’ll love the end result.

Our aim was to create a puzzle that is crammed with unique, quirky elements and characters so that the puzzler gets absorbed in the Pennywinks universe. We wanted the style of puzzle to be a joy to piece together, allowing the user to get into that illusive puzzle flow state. This is the kind of puzzle we love. Getting into that jigsaw zen state and forgetting about everything else in the world is a feeling that is hard to beat.

At this point we had found the perfect puzzle artist. The main concept was fleshed out and looked great but being the (annoying) perfectionists that we are we couldn't leave it there. We then focused on reviewing and tweaking, again and and again until we were happy with it.

We then professionally printed a jigsaw-sized poster and patted ourselves on the back, safe in the knowledge that we had nailed it.

We decided to make a proof of concept jigsaw from the artwork because we were too excited to wait (we hadn't finalised a manufacturer at this stage). Oh boy are we glad we did this. The puzzle was put together multiple times by ourselves and family members.  SO many new suggestions/improvements came out of this. Some of them very minor but each of them crucial.

The devil is in the details. A lot of these improvements were tiny but each one was important. Can you spot the difference? Below is a pic showing a before and after.
